There is a back to school toolkit to help young people and their trusted adults to communicate their feelings towards the change, to help them feel more comfortable and confident as they go back to school.

Amazon has currently cancelled all the subscription of books and audio stories for children and pupils of all ages as long as schools are closed, kids everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories, including titles across six different languages, that will help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being kids. All stories are free to stream on your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet using the following link https://stories.audible.com/start-listen.

Collins

Collins is giving free access to its online learning platform, Collins Connect, for the length of the school closures. The platform is for both primary and secondary schools and is home to learning and teaching resources for a range of subjects including English, maths and science at all levels, as well as international curricula. It includes more than 300 e-books from its Big Cat reading programme, activity sheets, a times tables practice tool, revision and PDF downloads of many of its titles. Collins is adding resources daily to the site.

Octopus

Octopus is launching a Meet The Author series on Instagram. Twice a week an Octopus author—across all subjects, including cooking, health, mindfulness, fashion, design and gardening—will introduce themselves and their book, and answer five questions that they feel readers would most want to know.

The BBC is currently offering pupils who are missing school daily with TV tuition which is aimed at different key stages, including GCSE and A level.

NewsGuard

NewsGuard offers news on the internet which has temporarily removed the paywall from its browser extension in order to make its anti-misinformation tool free to help address the urgent COVID-19 ‘infodemic.

Free National Theatre Shows on YouTube

The National Theatre has announced plans to stream NT Live shows for free on YouTube.

From Thursday 2 April, a number of productions previously screened in cinemas globally as a part of National Theatre Live will be made available to watch for free.

The first will be Richard Bean's One Man Two Guvnors featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from James Corden. All the productions will be free and screened live every Thursday at 7.00pm UK time and will then be available on demand for seven days on the NT's YouTube channel.

On 9 April there will be a streamed performance of Sally Cookson's Jane Eyre, Bryony Lavery's Treasure Island adaptation starring Arthur Darvill on 16 April and Twelfth Night with Tamsin Greig on 23 April. Further tiles are to be announced.

  • Weekly Short Story competition - submit your short stories by Friday each week.
  • Weekly Poetry competition - submit your poems by Friday each week.
  • Winning poems and short stories will be featured in the weekly bulletin as well as winning a (yet to be decided) prize.
  • All poems and short story submissions will be collated and published as a weekly anthology on Google Classroom.
  • We would also like your recommendations for books, films, short stories and games.
  • Write a short review of what the book/film/music/game is about (no spoilers!), who you would recommend it to (e.g. “People 13 years old and above” or “People who like Crime stories” or “People who like Grime” or “People who like RPGs”) and why.
Recommendations will be featured on the Library Website.
